The institute came into existence in 1898 and is one if the finest buildings in the area, a telltale of the great architectural marvels of the colonial time. The noted Nobel Prize winner scientist Robert Loch is said to have once visited this place on request of the Government of India. The Institute’s museum still houses the microscope used by him besides other articles of historical relevance.
